My art springs from a desire to embody emotion in abstract forms. Inspiration may come from my imagination, a vivid present experience, or a long-dormant memory. My paintings are the result of translating inspirations, through the sensitive use of materials, into images that embody emotion and affirm a sense of harmony.

Close Reach sailing means you are moving at a slant to the prevailing wind. This imagery and metaphor comes from my experience sailing offshore in the Atlantic or coasting along Florida's south-eastern coast. Collectors have described these colorful and textured paintings as enigmatic and joyful. The paintings playfully employ simplified depictions of well-know seaside forms. The multiple surface tensions and textures, controlled and idiosyncratic color, and the simplified drawing of shapes and spaces are all the means to embody the the immediate and primitive structure of real events. Behind all of this work is always the intuition that my experience has a significance that transcends its immediate importance for me personally. I offer these paintings as metaphors for the deep content we all share.

Manifolds are large paintings on canvas and employ the repetition of rectangular color shapes in compositions of stacked rows. The paintings achieve strong color presence and surface tensions with a dynamic balance. Their genesis springs from memories of my employment in the construction industry and experiences of the repetitive operations in building construction.

Axis paintings are typically smaller works on canvas and come from visceral memories of seeking alignment and balance in yoga practice. The paintings discover a coordination of visual qualities between fields aligned opposite one another along a central vertical axis.

The Levee images explore the flow of dark water moving through the locks and channel structures attached to the Lake Okeechobee levee. These small works on paper record an intensity of emotion through color and the repetitive use of a small group of notations referring to watercourse structures.

Location Reverie images use color and spatial notations to visualize memories of stair-steps into the front yards of vernacular buildings in North Florida.

Intuition is a collection of small abstractions on paper. I make them as a release from the rigors of the larger works. They are also a means of probing new thematic content and are suggestive of new inquiries.
